Peyton H. Colquitt was the son of United States Representative Walter T. Colquitt and his wife Nancy. His brother was Brigadier General Alfred Holt Colquitt, who later was a United States Senator and governor of Georgia. In the American Civil War, Colquitt fought in the second battle of the war, the Battle of Sewell's Point, as captain of the Columbus Light Guard, a Georgia unit. He later commanded 46th Georgia Infantry, organized in 1862. Col Colquitt served at the Battle of Chickamauga, where he was mortally wounded on September 20, 1863 commanding the brigade of States Rights Gist. ( Gist was acting as a division commander under MG W. H. T. Walker, leading the Reserve Corps of the Army of Tennessee.) A memorial stands near where he fell.() Col Colquitt died two days later. Col Colquitt is buried in the Linwood Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia.() His wife, Julia Flournoy Hurt Colquitt, is buried nearby.()
